Discover

Camping Portland, a five-star Yelloh! Village, is in Port-en-Bessin, seven kilometres from the start of Omaha Beach. The beach runs from Colleville-sur-Mer to Vierville-sur-Mer, below grassy bluffs where the Germans had dug their strongpoints. On 6 June 1944 the US 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions came ashore here under fire, on the day that earned the name “Bloody Omaha”. Today the sand stretches as far as the eye can see at low tide, and the remains can be visited on foot: the WN62 casemates above Colleville, the Signal monument at Saint-Laurent, the WN72 bunker at Vierville.

Four stops on Omaha Beach

Saint-Laurent and the Signal monument

Where the Les Moulins draw meets the beach, the Signal monument marks one of the first landing points. On the sand, the steel sculpture “Les Braves”, set up in 2004 for the 60th anniversary, honours the soldiers of 6 June. The Omaha Beach Memorial Museum is a short walk away, on avenue de la Libération.

Colleville and the Overlord Museum

Above the beach, a path runs past the casemates of strongpoint WN62, which covered the Easy Red and Fox Green sectors: this is where the view over the bay is widest. At the American Cemetery roundabout, the Overlord Museum shows the Leloup family collection, from vehicles to soldiers’ personal belongings, in life-size settings.

Vierville and its cliffs

To the west, the beach runs up against cliffs that lead on to the Pointe du Hoc. The US National Guard Memorial stands on top of the WN72 bunker, which guarded the Vierville draw: this is Dog Green sector, where the first waves of the 29th Division landed.

The beach at low tide

When the tide goes out, Omaha becomes a strand several hundred metres wide. You walk, fly a kite, and the children build sandcastles facing the slopes the soldiers climbed. Barefoot on that sand, the story of 6 June often becomes real for them.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about Omaha Beach

Which campsite should I choose near Omaha Beach?+
Camping Portland, a five-star Yelloh! Village in Port-en-Bessin, is 7 km from Colleville-sur-Mer and 11 km from Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, twelve to fifteen minutes along the coast road. It has an indoor water park heated to 30 °C, cottages for 4 to 8 people and premium pitches.
Can I walk to Omaha Beach from the campsite?+
No: the campsite is on the heights of Port-en-Bessin and Omaha Beach begins at Colleville, 7 km by road. You will need a car or a bike.
Can I cycle to Omaha Beach?+
Yes. La Vélomaritime (EuroVelo 4) links Port-en-Bessin to Colleville-sur-Mer, partly on quiet shared lanes, with a spur to the beach and the American Cemetery. Check the current route on the Vélomaritime website before you set off, and save some energy for the climb back up to Port-en-Bessin.
How long should I allow for Omaha Beach?+
A full day: an hour and a half for the Overlord Museum, an hour for the American Cemetery and its visitor centre, then the beach at low tide between Saint-Laurent and Vierville. With children, split the day and keep the campsite’s water park for the afternoon.
Can you swim at Omaha Beach?+
Yes, but check lifeguard cover locally: the villages set their lifeguard posts and hours each summer. On windy days, the campsite’s indoor water park, heated to 30 °C, takes over.
What else is there to see near Omaha Beach?+
The Pointe du Hoc, scaled by the US Rangers, is ten minutes west of Vierville, the Longues-sur-Mer battery is on the other side of Port-en-Bessin, and Bayeux is fifteen minutes from the campsite. All the beaches are on our D-Day beaches page.
When is the best time to visit Omaha Beach?+
In spring and September the beach is quiet and you can walk for miles almost alone. In early June, the D-Day Festival commemorations draw veterans’ families and visitors from across the world: book early if you want to be there.
